What is a Fat Quarter?

You will hear this term a lot when you are looking to buy quilting fabrics but what does it mean? Fabric normally comes on a bolt and the standard width is 112cms (44”) A Fat Quarter is a piece of fabric made by cutting half a metre of the full fabric width and then cutting this piece in half so that you end up with an almost square piece of fabric. This will generally give you a more usable piece of the design.

With most quilting fabric widths being 44″ / 112cms wide a Fat Quarter is therefore usually around the 50cm x 55cm mark.
